60+ family-friendly events in and around Cardiff for Halloween and half term October/November 2022
It’s half term for most schools in Wales next week and with it comes more events than you can shake a (broom) stick at. Some of the dates of the pick your own pumpkin events have sold out but there are still plenty of options for family-friendly activities. Plus there are plenty of non-Halloween themed events too, including the free Night of the Animal Wall trail as part of City of Arcades Week, and BrickLive’s The Ocean Show in Mermaid Quay, which sees giant brick models of sea creatures.
It’s impossible to include everything in this guide… I’m sure you can imagine how long it takes to put together… so do let me know anything I have missed in the comments on my social media channels.

Twilight pumpkin picking events will see the fields lit up so you can choose the perfect pumpkin as the autumn sun sets and the stars come out.

The display has been devised to entertain as well as educate children and families about the diversity of life in the earth’s oceans and about the major environmental issues that threaten their existence.

A free trail around the city centre, based on the new children’s book Night of the Animal Wall by local artist and author Jack Skivens. The story sees the characters from Cardiff Castle’s famous animal wall as they go on an adventure in the city. Billy the Bat’s Story Trail

Billy is a common pipistrelle bat who loves to zoom around the wetlands at night flying, feeding, meeting his friends, and sometimes getting into sticky situations. Learn more about him with this trail; pick up a book at the welcome kiosk and collect your prize on the way out.
The Gruffalo’s Bug Buffet – Minibeast Hunting

Become a nature detective this Halloween on a bug hunt like no other… Discover the spooky and spectacular creepy crawlies lurking on our reserve. The activity will follow a Gruffalo’s Buffet theme story to get little ones in the bug hunting mood.

The highly acclaimed children’s theatre company Theatr Iolo present Owl At Home at Chapter this half term. Based on Arnold Lobel’s illustrated children’s book, Owl lives alone in a cosy little home in a hollow tree in the woods. With no one to talk to, Owl sings to himself and looks for ways to pass the time. He wonders about things a lot. What will happen if he invites winter into his home? And can he be in two places at once? As his imagination runs away with him, ordinary objects begin to take on a life of their own and Owl finds an unexpected friend who’s willing to follow him to the ends of the earth… whether he likes it or not!
