It’s half-term next week, Halloween on the 31st, and there’s so much going on in and around Cardiff. From pumpkin carving and spooky trails to theatre and arts and crafts workshops, there’s enough here to fill half term at least seven times.

As always, all events are subject change and I recommend you check with the organisers beforehand to avoid disappointment. Events are categorised as follows: Halloween; Theatre, performance and culture; Outdoor events; Other events; Film and family-friendly cinema.

Spookfest 2016

Margam Park, Port Talbot

Saturday 22nd-Sunday 30th October

Dress up and take part in a spooky trail, £1 per quiz. Tuesday 25th sees Day of the Dead Halloween Mask Making, £3 per child, various times available. Wednesday 26th sees Meg and Mog in the Castle, a lighthearted show about a witch and her cat, £3 per child, various times available.

Spend an evening with the family at Caerphilly Castle to see the castle as you’ve never seen it before. Halloween 1666, Plague, Portends & Fire!

Halloween themed trails and games, including a spooky trail for children, splat the plague rat, castle executioner and 17th century characters. Last few tickets available for Halloween parties for babies (0-18 months), toddlers and pre-schoolers (1-4) and Halloween disco for ages 4-7, although age groups are flexible for sibling groups. FREE Cardiff Bus Spooktacular depot open day

Sunday 30th October, 12pm-4pm

Cardiff Bus are celebrating 30 years in the city with a family Halloween fun day. Tours of the depot will take you to the control room, the engineering department and a ride through the bus wash, as well as the chance to see some vintage Cardiff buses. There will be spooky goings-on with a Halloween-themed dress competition for children. Entry is free although donations appreciated for the charity Headspace.

Concert of the Unexpected: A Celebration of Roald Dahl Starring Michael Sheen

A family-friendly musical tribute to Roald Dahl in the centenary year of his birth. The night will include the world premiere of Mr Dahl, by emerging Welsh composer Bernard Kane Jr and starring Michael Sheen. The rest of the programme highlights Dahl’s wat years as a pilot (Walton’s Spitfire, Prelude and Fugue); his Norwegian family roots (Grieg’s much loved Peer Gynt Suite) and one of Dahl’s most popular tales (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).

The Welsh branch of national music charity Live Music Now present two hours of creative and musical fun for all ages, to celebrate the Roald Dahl Centenary. LMN musicians, Triptych (soprano, piano, cello) will take you on a phizz-whizzing interactive musical journey through Dahl’s world of pure imagination, with songs from and inspired by his classic children’s stories. There will also be plenty of hands-on creative, sensory fun, including making an edible Mr Twit, creating a BFG-inspired dream jar, as well as making your own Marvellous Medicine.

There are also various arts and crafts workshops throughout the week, I Made It! The film adaptation of Arthur Ransome’s classic novel sees the Walker children on an adventure to claim an island in the Lake District. They head over on their boat, Swallow, to discover another gang, the Amazons, have already set up camp, and a battle for the island begins. But with Britain on the brink of war, real battles aren’t far away, and their childhood paradise is turned upside down.
