Sign up now for a free family cycle event this Sunday in Cardiff Bay with HSBC UK City Ride Cardiff

What are you doing this Sunday? How about a day of family cycling on traffic-free closed roads, with entertainment and activities en route too? And all for free!

That’s exactly what’s on offer with the HSBC UK City Ride, which comes to Cardiff Bay as part of a nationwide series of traffic-free cycling events designed to encourage as many people as possible to get out on their bikes.

Cyclists are invited to take over the streets of major cities across the UK for the day, with Cardiff one of 14 places hosting an event.

It’s free to take part – but you will need to register online. You can do this right up until the event. Everyone registering will receive a free HSBC UK City Ride bib to keep; and 10% off bikes and cycling equipment, plus a free bike check, at Halfords. The first 500 riders to sign up will also get a voucher for a free muffin, while there’s a chance to win £100 off a cycle holiday.

It’s not a race. You can cycle as much or as little as you like, and join or leave the 6km route at any point between 11am and 3pm, making it perfect for families and cyclists of all abilities.

There’s plenty of entertainment and activities at the main Hub at Roald Dahl Plass, including the chance to race on the pop-up Street Velodrome; the Kids’ Zone where you can decorate your bike and learn new skills from British Cycling’s HSBC UK Go-Ride crew; a BMX off-road area for kids; the chance to try different types of bikes at the Trial Trail, including a rickshaw ride and a tandem.

On the route itself, which takes you through the Bay and across the Barrage, there will be entertainment and music to keep you going, a Toot Your Horn Zone where you can make as much noise as possible, and the Sir Chris Hoy Speed Challenge, where you can test your sprint skills against the best.

Olympic and Commonwealth games medallist cyclist Becky James (pictured below) will also be there, starting the ride off from Roald Dahl Plass, visiting activity areas around the route and meeting and greeting cyclists.

There’s also food and drink stalls, plus information on how to get into cycling in the South Wales area.

If you don’t have a bike, you can hire one in advance from Cardiff Pedal Power. Non-cyclists are welcome to come along anyway and enjoy the free entertainment in the Hub areas, including the Breakaway Café.
