Cooking with kids – chocolate and sprinkle-coated strawberries

My Instagram and Facebook feeds are full of photos people spending the summer strawberry picking at local pick-your-own farms.

Not that strawberries aren’t delicious on their own, but if you’re looking for a fun little way to eat them, then I highly recommend these chocolate and sprinkle-coated strawberries. They’re quick and easy to make, look impressive, are healthy-ish and are a great one for children to help with (as you can see from these photos, which are definitely my children’s handiwork!).

Here’s how to make them.

Ingredients:

Chocolate strawberries

1 punnet of strawberries, washed

200g of chocolate (plain, milk or white – we used one bar plain, one bar milk)

2 tbsp milk

A jar of ice cream sprinkles, poured onto a plate or bowl

To make:

  1. Line a tray with greaseproof/baking paper.
  2. Break the chocolate into chunks, and place in a glass bowl along with 2tbsp milk over a pan of simmering boiled water. Stir until melted over a low heat, making sure the liquid mixture doesn’t burn.
  3. Holding the strawberries by the green stalks, dip in the chocolate, making sure they are covered in a thin layer.
  4. Dip the strawberries into the sprinkles to coat and then place on the lined tray.
  5. Leave for at least half an hour at room temperature for the chocolate to harden.
  6. Don’t forget to let your children lick the spoons and bowls clean!
  7. If they’re not all devoured straight away, you can store them in an air tight container in the fridge for a day or two. They’re best served at room temperature though, so bring them out of the fridge half an hour or so before serving.
