Mummy style – a dress for date night from Warehouse

Style

Cardiff Daddy and I have a night out planned this weekend – dinner and some drinks in celebration of his birthday. I’ve told him I don’t mind where we go as long as it’s somewhere I won’t look out of place if I wear big killer heels and a dress. I don’t go out very often these days so when I do, I love the excuse to glam up.

This black and white dress is £55 from Warehouse in Cardiff’s St David’s shopping centre. I bought it a couple of weeks ago (along with the denim dress and floral blouse I wrote about here) to wear for a get-together with my university friends. They live all over the country so we don’t get to see each other as often as we’d like, especially as the last few years have been a constant stream of all of us having babies.

I headed to Warehouse in a panic because I had nothing in my wardrobe suitable for such an occasion. I asked Gemma and Nic, two of the amazing members of staff there, to help me find something that would see me through from daytime into night, and which was dressy but not overly dressy.

I tried on a few outfits – and then Gemma suggested this dress, which she owns herself and which she thought would suit me perfectly. I wasn’t sure as it didn’t look like much on the hanger; in fact, I’d ignored it on the shop floor. But Gemma was right – I tried it on and knew straight away it was the perfect outfit for an occasion I had been excited about for months.

Being a petite 5ft, I sometimes struggle with dresses because the cut is all wrong on me. But this chiffony-style dress fitted me in all the right places. I love the bell sleeves and the button and tie detail at the front.

I wore it with opaque black tights, shoe boots, gold earrings and cuff bangle, and a gorgeous black coat I bought three years ago for a winter wedding and which has been an amazing investment because it manages to make any outfit look glamorous.

This is exactly how I’ll be wearing it when we go out this weekend for our date night.

I’ve written on my blog before about how I’ve struggled to get my sense of style back since having children and a lot of you tell me you relate. My body has changed so much from having three children in four years. I spent such a lot of that time in maternity and breastfeeding-friendly clothes and, in between pregnancies, in clothes that were well past their best. The fashion press seems to ignore mums when it comes to clothing inspiration and it’s taken me a while to get my confidence back and to find clothes that are stylish yet practical enough for day-to-day life with three children.

Now, I didn’t buy this dress to wear while on mummy duty – but I wore it last weekend to a second birthday celebration for Toddler Boy I and his little friends whose mummies I did Daisy Birthing with (like I said, I don’t get out much so this get-together was a real social occasion for me!) and it didn’t feel at all restrictive in terms of running round after Toddler and his big brother and sister.

I admit it had to go straight in the washing machine after the party thanks to sticky fingers covered in birthday cake – but it’s all washed and dried and ready to go for date night.
