We loved this new exhibition at St Fagans charting the history of women’s football in Wales

From a ban by the FA and FAW of almost 50 years from 1921/2 to 1970, to funding being withdraw from the Euro 20025 games in favour of Mark Hughes’ men’s team, it has not been an easy journey for the women in red.

Wales is… For Her – a new display in the galleries at St Fagans National Museum of History – is testament to the determination and dedication of the players, managers and everyone else involved in campaigning for recognition of the women’s game.

There’s signed shirts, old programmes and other memorabilia, photos of players and fans, and a fascinating timeline of around 140 years, showing how the game has survived and risen in popularity against the odds, leading to today’s record crowds, more girls playing than ever before, and Cymru qualifying for their first major championship, the recent UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

You can find the display in the Wales Is… gallery, upstairs in the museum’s main entrance building. It’s a small area of the gallery, rather than a full-scale exhibition but there’s plenty of fascinating information for fans of football and those new to the game too.

It’s also worth looking around the rest of the gallery, which is home to some incredible artefacts and displays from Welsh history, including the clock synonymous with the Aberfan tragedy and signage from Capel Celyn, the village flooded for the Tryweryn Reservoir. Plus step next door to the Life Is… gallery which is explores what life was like for people in Wales over the decades and centuries, from what the wore to what the ate and what they did for holidays and leisure.

And, of course, there’s the rest of the open air history museum to explore, with more than 50 historical buildings from across Wales carefully taken down from where they once stood and rebuilt on the museum’s grounds.
