It’s amazing how much life changes when you become a parent. From the moment you set eyes on that precious newborn bundle (in fact, even from the moment you discover you are expecting) you would do anything to protect them and ensure they come to no harm.

But sadly we can’t always protect our children. Sadly, every day children are diagnosed with serious illnesses or medical conditions – and not all of them will survive.

Simply writing that down has reduced me to tears because I can’t even begin to imagine how devastating that must be. To see your beautiful child fighting for their life, or knowing they have a condition that means they won’t make it into adulthood, must be a pain like no other.

For many families, that is the reality though.

Here in Wales, Tŷ Hafan children’s hospice in Sully in the Vale of Glamorgan, has supported more than 650 such children and their families since 1999.

And I’m humbled to be asked to support Tŷ Hafan as one of their blogger ambassadors. Over the coming weeks, I’ll be raising awareness of the work that they do through my blog and social media channels. I hope that some of you reading this will get involved too.

Tŷ Hafan is one of the UK’s leading paediatric palliative care charities, offering care to children and support to their families, throughout Wales.

Tŷ Hafan offers comfort, care and support to life-limited children, young people and their families in the hospice, the community and in their home so that they can make the most of the time they have together. Parents and carers can relax and recharge their batteries, and the needs of brothers and sisters are never forgotten. They also offer end-of-life care and bereavement support. All this is provided to the families for free – so you can understand why raising awareness and funds is so important.

Tŷ Hafan’s current campaign is called Precious Moments. Tŷ Hafan can’t give the gift of time to many of the families they look after – but they can give them the gift of precious moments to enjoy together.

You only have to look at these beautiful photos to see exactly how much precious moments mean to the families Tŷ Hafan is working with.

The charity are now asking people across Wales and beyond to share their own precious moments on social media. This will help to raise awareness of the important work that they do, not to mention encouraging donations for the £4m they need to raise each year to provide their services.

The campaign is already under way, and each week will take a different theme, based on a word related to each of the letters in the word precious.

This week the word is exciting. I’m sharing the above photo on my social media sites. It was taken on Woolacombe Bay in Devon on our family holiday earlier this year. My children were so excited to be running bare-footed on the sand and to see the sea. They ran right into the waves, all got completely wet and covered in sand and needed fresh clothes, but none of us cared because it truly epitomised a precious moment that I feel lucky to have shared with my family.

I’ve just donated to Tŷ Hafan via their website and have four bags of clothes and other items to give to their charity shops.

Even a small amount can make a massive difference to the families Tŷ Hafan supports.

£10 could pay for outreach play therapy for a family and their child.

£15 could pay for half an hour of physiotherapy to ease a child’s pain.

£23 could pay for an hour of support for a family.

You can also help support Tŷ Hafan through financial donations or by donating unwanted goods including quality unwanted men’s, women’s and children’s clothes and accessories, bric a brac, homeware, books, DVDs and CDs, furniture, children’s toys and much more, not to mention shopping in any of their 31 charity shops across Wales. Goods can be dropped off at any of their shops or a free collection can be arranged. If you’re a vintage fan, check out the three Vintage Emporium shops they have in South Wales, as well as their eBay shop.

Will you share your precious moments for Tŷ Hafan? You can share with me on any of my social media channels – and don’t forget to tag in Tŷ Hafan too and use #preciousmoments. Or even just liking or sharing this post on social media will help ensure the campaign reaches as many people as possible.
