The little steps we take to make our Christmas as eco-friendly as possible

Paid collaboration with Climate Action Wales
As a family, we absolutely love Christmas – but we also love our planet, so we try to make our festive season as eco-friendly as we can.
Here’s a few things we do to help create a cleaner, greener Wales.
Caru’r Nadolig – caru’r blaned.
- Our Christmas jumpers are the same ones we’ve worn for the last few years. My youngest son now has his older brother’s jumper – and we’ve replaced the one he’s grown out of with a second hand one.
2. No seasonal single use coffee cups for us – these are really hard to recycle with millions ending up in landfill every year. I get my gingerbread hot chocolate in the same reusable cup I use all year round.
3. We plan in advance what Christmas food we need and don’t overbuy ‘just in case’. More than 10 million tonnes of food are binned each year in the UK, not only causing harmful greenhouse gases but wasting an average of £470 per family.
4. We gift a lot of experiences and shop locally. This year, our loved ones will be receiving theatre tickets, annual membership for local attractions, and hampers filled with locally-produced foodie treats. We’d much rather help create happy memories than give something someone doesn’t really want.
5. My children choose a new bauble each year but otherwise, we reuse the same decorations every single Christmas. So much of the magic is in the memories and tradition and we love reminiscing about the ornaments they bought when they were little.
6. Our wooden advent calendars help cut down plastic waste. Chocolate treats without the plastic waste.
7. I’ll be reusing gift bags from last year, and saving any we’re given this year for next Christmas. We’ll use brown paper tied with ribbon for any gifts that need wrapping as it’s the easiest option for recycling.
No one can do everything when it comes to climate change – but everyone can do something and together small changes add up.
