40+family-friendly theatre shows and performances in and Cardiff before the end of 2025

Whether you’re looking for an engaging first theatre show for your toddler, a laugh out loud play for your tweens, a Christmas panto that the whole family can enjoy or a classic musical, the theatres of South East Wales have got you covered.
There’s so much going on over the next couple of months, with something for all ages and all tastes. Some I’m particularly looking forward to this season are the highly acclaimed production of Fiddler on the Roof at the New Theatre Cardiff, the hilarious Christmas Carol Gone Wrong, the vibrant and empowering Six and the emotional War Horse at Wales Millennium Centre, and Theatr na nÓg’s new play about Welsh boxing legend Cuthbert Taylor at the Sherman Theatre.
Plus it looks set to be a bumper Christmas theatre season with Mary Poppins flying into Wales Millennium Centre, Rapunzel at the Riverfront and Sleeping Beauty at the New Theatre, and the Sherman Theatre’s annual family shows, The Frog Prince / Biwti a’r Brogs for under 7s and Alice: Return to Wonderland for those 7 and above.
I’ve also included a few that aren’t strictly PG family-friendly but which are good options for those of you who have older teenagers or fancy a child-free night out. You’ll see an age guidance on these shows.

The Frog Prince / Biwti a Brogs, Gwawr Loader’s delightful reimagining of the classic Brothers Grimm story, is the Sheman’s annual theatre show for three to six year olds, with separate English and Welsh productions. When daughter of the king, Biwti, bumps into Brogs, a cheeky frog, she begins to learn that there are many different types of perfect and what the secret to happiness really is. Filled with songs, laughter and fun, this charming show is performed in an informal setting, making it the ideal introduction to the live theatre.

It’s Christmas Eve and the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the spirit of his long- dead business partner, Jacob Marley, who delivers a grim warning: his eternal suffering is the price of a life consumed by greed—and Scrooge is hurtling toward the same dreadful doom. Yet there is a flicker of hope.
