45+ family-friendly theatre shows and live performances in and around Cardiff for summer 2022 and beyond
We are so lucky in Cardiff and the surrounding areas to have such great theatres, showing everything from large scale musicals to small independent performances and amazing amateur companies. Big budget production highlights this summer include Disney’s The Lion King and School of Rock at Wales Millennium Centre (on this week) while at the other end of the scale there’s a welcome return for the wonderful Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival at Sophia Gardens, with Go Theatre’s production of Disney’s High School Musical, while the Sherman Theatre’s youth theatre present Treasure Island. The hilariously funny play The Show That Goes Wrong is also at Wales Millennium Centre, there’s a stage adaptation of David Walliams’ much-loved book Gangsta Granny at the New Theatre, Horrible Histories is bringing its Terrible Tudors show to Blackwood and Barry, the Paw Patrol pups will be at Cardiff Motorpoint Arena, plus Dinosaur World Live will be bringing its lifelike creatures to Newport and Cardiff.
For the youngest theatre goers, there’s TV faves In The Night Garden at the New Theatre, Tiddler and Other Tall Tales at the Sherman Theatre and the Tiddly Prom at St David’s Hall (I adored these when my children were small).
Pluss, as you’ll see below, loads more theatre and other live shows for all ages. As the title of this post suggests, these are family-friendly shows, aimed at different age groups, up to about 13/14. (There’s also plenty of ‘grown up’ performances you may like to head along to without the children. Check the relevant websites for listings.)
I have given age guidance ratings where supplied by the theatre or production company but this is not available for all shows. If you have any concerns as to whether a show is suitable for your child please speak to the box office directly.

The Black Spider is a creepy, comic tale that takes us from the present day back to the Middle Ages. We revisit ancient Poland, where a mysterious green man offers to protect a village from their evil landlord in exchange for the beautiful Christina’s hand in marriage. When she breaks her promise and weds her true love instead, the village is cursed with a plague from a spider that crawls out of her hand.
Christina battles to save her people and eventually buries the spider outside the church to end the disaster. However, centuries later amid excavations at the church, archaeologists are hit by an unexplained virus…
