I became a victim of bank fraud and I have no idea how it happened

I wanted to tell you about something weird and worrying that happened earlier this week.
Somehow, someone managed to make some fraudulent transactions from my bank account.
I check my online banking pretty much daily, I’m always super aware of how much money I have in my account so I spotted four £20 payments to a company I didn’t recognise the following day. As it’s a joint account, I checked with my husband, I checked with my kids in case they’d inadvertently bought something on their phones and forgotten to tell me. No one had.
So, I phoned my bank who were super helpful and told me that it looked like my bank card had been “compromised”.
I have no idea how this happened. I hadn’t lost or misplaced my card, it hadn’t been out of my sight. I hadn’t withdrawn any cash recently so it was unlikely to be a tapped cash machine. It’s scary thinking somehow someone did this and I have no idea how.
I wanted to share this as a warning really. Keep a regular eye on your banking. £80 is a fair amount but it’s a small enough amount that if you don’t check your balance and transactions very often, and you have a busy account with lots of payments going in and out, you might not notice it’s gone.
Thankfully UK banking is protected against this kind of fraud so I’ll get my money back.
My bank have said it’ll be in investigated but I may never know how it happened or who did it.
I’m so angry that there are people out there doing this. How many other accounts were scammed on the same day? How much money are these fraudsters stealing?
Most bank fraud like this never gets solved, which is really frustrating. All we can do is be vigilant with our cards, check our bank statements regularly – and report any suspicious activity straight away.
