65+ family-friendly things to do in and around Cardiff this May half term
Let’s hope the sunshine continues for the bank holiday weekend and half term. There’s so much going on for families in and around Cardiff – I’ve rounded up everything I could find here but do add details of anything I have missed in the comments below or on the Cardiff Mummy Says Facebook page. Events are split into the following categories: Charity; Sporting; Family Fun Days and Games; Theatre, cultural and performance; Craft; Science; Historical; Outdoors and nature; cinema. All events are subject to change or cancellation; please check ahead with the organisers to avoid disappointment.
Don’t forget the Champions League final is taking place in Cardiff on Saturday 3rd June, so do make sure to check travel plans in advance, as road closures, increased traffic and changes in public transport are sure to have an impact.
This events guide is kindly sponsored by Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales*. They operate seven museums across Wales, all of which are free to visit. The museums have loads of fantastic events over the bank holiday, most of them are free or have a nominal charge.
Dinosaur Babies at National Museum Cardiff includes full-size dinosaur skeletons and replicas, touchable models of dinosaur embryos and eggs, plus a 2.5 metre model dinosaur nest. It opens on Saturday 27th May and runs until Sunday 5th November, with adults costing £7, children 4-17 £3 and £17 for a family (2+2) or £13 (1+3), 3s and under free. Buy in advance from Ticketline.
The launch day sees free family dress up and craft activities between 10am and 4pm, with free family workshops running from Tuesday 29th May until Saturday 2nd June (11am, 1pm and 3pm – book at the information desk on arrival, spaces limited), where you can find out more about baby dinosaurs and make a dinosaur egg craft to take home.
St Fagans National Museum of History is inviting people to visit in historical dress with Dress Up St Fagans (Saturday 27th-Bank Holiday Monday 29th May, 11am-4pm). Bank Holiday Monday also sees Zoot-Stute with music, dancing and mid-century style at the Oakdale Workmen’s Institute. Entry to St Fagans is free but parking cost £5, coins only.
There are also plenty of nature-themed activities, with Hedgerow Highlights guided walks (Tuesday 30th May-Friday 2nd June, 12pm, 2pm and 3pm, age 5+, £2 per person); Birds family activity sessions including collage, sketching, colouring and bird spotting (Tuesday 30th May-Friday 2nd June, 12-4pm; free); Nature workshops in the barns and woods (Tuesday 30th May-Sunday 4th June, 12-4pm, small charge for some activities); Meet The Beekeepers (Saturday 3rd June, 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm, free); and Nature craft session (Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th June, 12pm-4pm, £2 per child).
Big Pit has Landscape Detectives, a free trail exploring how nature has transformed the Coity Tip into a haven for wildlife (Sunday 27th May-Saturday 4th June, 12pm-4pm. Creative Creatures drop in crafts sessions run Tuesday 30th-Thursday 1st June 12pm-4pmk at £1 per child, with soft play in the Playlab for the under 5s at £1 per child. At National Roman Legion Museum in Caerleon you can Become A Legend with workshops at 11am, 12pm, 2pm and 3pm from Tuesday 29th May-Friday 2nd June, £2 per child. Listen to stories about Roman heroes and then join in gladiator training. Read our review here.
Finally, National Waterfront Museum in Swansea has a free Superhero Day on Saturday 27th May, from 12pm-4pm, with science, trails, crafts and shows, as well as The Science of Superheroes free show at 1pm and 3pm, featuring author Mark Brake and CBBC’s Jon Chase. Sunday 28th May sees a free showing of the film Swallows and Amazons (PG) at 2.30pm; while Apollo 11 Campervan (Monday and Tuesday 12.30pm and 2.30pm, £3 per person, age 7+, advance booking only) explores what the third Apollo 11 astronaut got up to while his colleagues walked on the moon. Tuesday 30th May-Sunday 4th June also sees 3 Cool Things To Make With A Penny, a hands-on interactive event running from 12.30pm-3.30pm.

A chance for young scientists to try their hand at being ‘mad scientists’ for the day, with a host of exciting hands-on and interactive experiments to try. Small scientists can have a go at making DNA ‘bracelets’ to match their eye colour; and take a look at the DNA of snakes, butterflies, apes, humans and flowers. The event takes place under the supervision of Cancer Research Wales’ own leading Welsh-based scientists who are regularly making great discoveries in the areas of early diagnosis, better treatments and preventatives of cancer for the benefit of cancer patients everywhere.

A four-day free family festival will see global and local artists, DJs and bands, plus a floating five-a-side pitch, which will host the UEFA Ultimate Champions Match on 2 June, featuring legends of football, as well as community games. Wales Millennium Centre will host The UEFA Champions Gallery, a museum celebrating the Champions League’s history, while the Pierhead building will be transformed into an interactive Virtual Champion Arena, offering a virtual reality experience.

One of the highlights of the South Wales foodie scene, Cowbridge Food and Drink sees food and drink producers from across Wales descend upon the market town in the Vale of Glamorgan. Every Saturday, visitors can discover what life was like for a soldier in the Roman army. Visit the reconstructed barrack room and learn more about the weapons and armour, as well as try on some replica armour. Families can also dress up and play games in the Capricorn Centre, a relaxed hands-on area of the museum. Both areas are closed on Sundays but are open during some school holidays.

FREE The Winding Engine
The Winding House, New Tredegar

The Winding House is a museum built on the site of the former Elliot Colliery. Its centre-piece is the original Victorian winding engine, which used to operate the cages which transported men and coal between the surface and the mine below. Visitors can see the huge engine in operation for 10-15 minutes at 12pm on the last Saturday of the month.
