Museum of the Moon has landed at National Museum Cardiff – and it looks incredible!

The glowing seven-metre sculpture is hanging in the Museum’s Great Hall entrance area for the next month. It’s free to visit, although booking in advance is highly recommended as it is already proving to be popular.

Created by UK artist Luke Jerram, Museum of the Moon features detailed NASA imagery that shows what the moon looks like close up, and is accompanied by a magical soundscape.

It’s a touring artwork that has appeared across the UK and the world, in cathedrals, galleries, museums and other indoor spaces.

It’s a real sensory experience – you can stand underneath it but it’s also worth heading to the upstairs galleries to get a closer look at the detail.

You can also step inside a spacesuit installation, choose a moon-themed souvenir in the gift shop, and head to the Evolution of Wales gallery where you can see a piece of actual moon rock – a sample from the Apollo 12 mission – on display.

The museum has organised a full programme of events to celebrate the Moon’s arrive, including silent discos and yoga under the moon, although demand was so high that these have already sold out.

The Museum of the Moon’s arrival in Cardiff is especially poignant for its creator Luke, as he studied for an art degree in Cardiff and regularly visited the museum for inspiration.

Luke said: “I studied Fine Art at what is now Cardiff Metropolitan University and used to visit the museum every weekend to gaze in wonder at the incredible art on display. So, some 30 years later, it’s a great privilege to have my artwork on display at an institution which was so influential on my development as an artist.”

Visitors are advised to book in advance as the demand to see Museum of the Moon is high. National Museum Cardiff has introduced a new free booking system to manage capacity and to help people to plan their visit and manage bookings.

Museum of the Moon is at National Museum Cardiff from Tuesday 10 March to Sunday 12 April. It is free to view although it is strongly advisable to book in advance to guarantee entry to the museum

The museum is open Tuesdays to Sundays, 10am-5pm. It is closed on Mondays, although open on Bank Holiday Mondays
