Paid collaboration with The Red Dragon Centre.
This guide has been written in association with The Red Dragon Centre as part of Cardiff Mummy Says’ role as family blogger ambassador for the Cardiff Bay entertainment complex. The Red Dragon Centre is home to Hollywood Bowl for 10-pin family fun; family-friendly restaurants and cafes; and a huge Odeon cinema, which is the only digital IMAX® screen in South Wales.
They have plenty going on for families this summer, including the much-anticipated Balloon Art Fiesta, which takes place over the August bank holiday weekend, from Friday 23 to Monday 26 August.
The Balloon Art Fiesta is inspired by all things wild and wonderful, with the sculptures being created by the award-winning and internationally-acclaimed Doctor Bob Balloons Unlimited. Bob uses Qualatex latex balloons in his sculptures (not plastic), with the balloons biodegradable. In fact, they decompose as fast as an oak leaf in your garden!
As well as the balloon creations, families can also take part in a free sculpture trail between 11am-6pm by picking up a form from the Green Zone inside the Centre.
The Green Zone houses a giant green sofa, as well as a life-sized artificial grass lion, in celebration of the new Disney live action remake of The Lion King, which hits screens on Friday 19 July.
We’ll definitely be watching that over the summer, as well as Toy Story 4, which we’ve not yet managed to see. (Read my full guide to family films this summer here).
The good news is that tickets at the Odeon are now £5 all day every day, for standard 2D films when bought at the cinema. You can read more here.
Plus a great budget-busting holiday activity is the £2.50 Odeon Kids showings. These early morning screenings (usually around 10am) take place every weekend and every day during local school holidays. They are a great chance to catch slightly older films on the big screen and a perfect low-cost indoor option when the weather’s not great. Visit the Odeon Kids page for latest listings.
Family-friendly restaurants at The Red Dragon Centre include Bella Italia where children can eat for £1 with the purchase of an adult meal (every day except Saturdays until 18 August), as well as great all-you-can-eat buffet options at Spice Route and Oriental Garden. Plus for a holiday treat, stop by Cadwaladers which has a range of sundaes, milkshakes and hot chocolates alongside hot and cold snacks, sandwiches, pizzas, and ice cream treats, plus vegan alternatives too.
Parking is free for up to six hours for customers of The Red Dragon Centre (subject to minimum spend and entering your registration number into the terminals at one of the outlets) so you can make a day of it, with bowling and arcade games at Hollywood Bowl or a meal or refreshments at one of the family-friendly cafes and restaurants.
