Mae fy mhlant yn caru teithio ar y trên ers bod nhw’n fach, ond nawr eu bod nhw’n tyfu fyny, maen nhw’n fwy tebygol o fynd ar y trên gyda’u ffrindiau na’u rhieni.

Dwi’n caru gweld nhw’n dod yn fwy annibynnol, ond fel rhiant, dwi eisiau gwybod eu bod nhw’n saff wrth deithio, felly aethon ni am ddiwrnod allan fel teulu ar y trên i fi allu siarad â nhw am y Metro De Cymru newydd.

Mae trydaneiddio Llinellau Craidd y Cymoedd a Chaerdydd yn ddatblygiad cyffrous gan y bydd trenau lleol yn gyflymach ac yn fwy cynaliadwy nac erioed. Er hynny, i’r rhai nad sy’n parchu’r rheilffyrdd, mae’n beryglus.

Wrth i ni anelu am Fae Caerdydd – rhan olaf llinellau’r cymoedd i gael ei drydaneiddio – cawsom ni sioc i ddysgu bod 25,000 folt o drydan yn rhedeg drwy’r Llinellau Trydan Uwchben (OLE) ar bob adeg – hyn yn oed pan nad yw’r trenau’n rhedeg.

Does dim perygl i’r bobl sy’n defnyddio’r rheilffyrdd yn gywir. Ond mae unrhyw un nad sy’n parchu ffiniau’r rheilffordd, drwy groesi’r ffens neu fariau, yn rhoi eu hunain mewn perygl, nid yn unig oherwydd y llinellau pŵer, ond gan symudiadau trenau nad sy’n ymddangos ar fyrddau gwybodaeth.

Mae nifer o achosion tresmasu yn ymwneud a phobl ifanc o dan 18 felly mae’n bwysig iawn bod pobl ifanc yn ymwybodol o’r peryglon. Mae ymddygiad anniogel ar y rheilffyrdd – beth fyddai rhai arddegwyr yn cyfri fel ‘chwarae o gwmpas’ – nawr yn gallu golygu marwolaeth.

Fel mae ymgyrch newydd Trafnidiaeth Cymru yn nodi, does Dim Ail Gyfle wrth gamddefnyddio’r rheilffordd.

Cardiff Mummy Says and teens/tweens waiting to board the train

No Second Chances: Talking to children about using the new electrified South Wales Metro

My children have loved travelling on trains since they were little, but now they’re teens and tweens, they’re more likely to be catching a train with their friends than with their parents.

I love their growing independence but, as a parent, I want to know they’re safe when they’re out and about, and so we took the train for a family day out so I could talk to them about the new South Wales Metro.

The electrification of the Core Valley and Cardiff Lines is really exciting as it means local trains will be faster and more sustainable than ever before. However, for those who don’t respect the railway, it also brings danger.

As we headed to Cardiff Bay – the last section on the Valleys lines to be electrified – we were shocked to learn there’s 25,000v of electricity running through Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) at all times – even when the trains aren’t running.

There are no dangers to people using the railway correctly. But anyone who does not respect the railway boundary – crossing fence lines or barriers – could be putting themselves at risk, not just from the electric power lines but from train movement that does not appear on info boards or journey planners.

Many instances of trespassing involve under-18s so it’s really important young people are aware of the dangers. Unsafe behaviour around the railway – what some teens might class as “just messing about” – is now potentially fatal.

As the new Transport for Wales campaign images say, there are No Second Chances when it comes to misusing the railway.
