Is a self-portrait the original selfie? Amgueddfa Cymru’s new exhibition Art of the Selfie explores and asks this question, looking at how artists through time, from Rembrandt and Van Gogh to Bedwyr Williams and Anya Paintsil, see and represent themselves. Van Gogh painted no fewer than 35 self-portraits and so became arguably one of the most recognizable faces in Western art. This exhibition will feature Van Gogh’s Portrait of the Artist (1887), which is on loan from Musée d’Orsay, Paris. Joining Van Gogh will be a selection of artists from the national collection of Wales, including Rembrandt, Brenda Chamberlain, Francis Bacon, Bedwyr Williams, and Anya Paintsil. Together they showcase a wide range of different methods and artistic approaches to the concept of the self-portrait.

FREE Wales is… talking about empire
St Fagans National Museum of History, Cardiff
Open daily
What do the museum’s collections reveal about representation in Wales? How can the museum foreground marginalised histories and experiences to reflect Welsh life? Whose voices or narratives are most powerful? St Fagans is working with to explore these and other questions in this new display as part of the Perspective(s) project. Artist Nasia Sarwar-Skuse and arts organisation Ways of Working are working with the museum’s collections and communities to explore the themes of colonialism and museums as complex institutions that represent a particular system of Western knowledge. A collaboration between the Arts Council of Wales and Amgueddfa Cymru, and supported by the Welsh Government, it seeks to change how the visual arts and heritage sector reflects the cultural and ethnic diversity of our society.
