National Museum Cardiff has a new bison! You might remember the old one, Bertie, had to be removed a few years ago after more than 25 years. He was so well-loved by visitors that he had sadly become damaged and a lot of his hair had fallen out.

This is Bertie 2, who has just joined the Museum in time for February half term. You can find Bertie near the giant deer and mammoth skeletons in the Ice Age section of the Evolution of Wales gallery, where you’ll also discover some bison bones, horns, and facts about their evolution.

Bertie is a European Bison (Bison bosanus), which survive in small numbers in northern Eurasia, and is closely related to the Ice Age bison (Bison priscus) which became extinct more than 20,000 years ago.

Bertie is in place thanks to a kind donation from Simon Gibson Charitable Trust – the Museum is a charity, and donations of all sizes make a difference in supporting its work.

If you’re visiting National Museum Cardiff, you can now book for free in advance.

Booking a free day ticket ensures you receive key information and updates before your visit, helping you to make the most of your experience.

You can also add on extra events and exhibitions (some which may have an additional charge), as well as making a donation to support the museum’s work in preserving Wales’ history.

You can still visit without booking, although admission may be limited at busy times.

National Museum Cardiff,  Cathays Park, Cardiff CF10 3NP. The Museum is open Tue-Sun, 10am-5pm. Closed Mondays, open Bank Holiday Mondays. Entry to the Museum is free, but advance booking is highly recommended via the National Museum Cardiff website.
